Phasing and Visibility -- Revisited

A few of you had mentioned that the glass in your exterior walls was showing up as opaque (gray) in 3D views.  Those walls and their windows should have been set to the existing phase.  In your 3D views, the way we currently have the Phase Filters set-up (Show Previous + New - fig 1) is creating a graphic override for any element on the existing phase to make it appear gray (fig 2).  This allows us to quickly identify what is existing and what is new. If we want the existing elements to visually appear similar to the new construction elements in 3D views, we must change the Phase Filter in the view properties to "Show Complete" (fig 3).  This provides a visual representation of how the building will look when it is finished (fig 4).  The trick here is that if you work with this Phase Filter active it is difficult to graphically distinguish what is existing and what is new.  Be careful so that you are not deleting existing elements instead of demolishing them.

As-builts and Linking ACAD

In order to get our projects off to a good start, we've successfully measured our space, created a basic AutoCAD drawing, and have properly set-up our Revit files. The next step will be to link the ACAD drawing into our Revit files and begin adding the modeled elements. We'll start with generic walls, a column grid, and architectural columns.

 To make sure that we'll be able to create existing, demo, and new plan documents, we'll need to use phasing for the modeled elements representing the as-built conditions. We'll work with phasing next week and discuss how to customize our walls so that they reflect the unique conditions of the space.

Welcome to Summer 2012

Hi all and welcome to Summer Quarter 2012 BIM for Interior Design (ELDS 335).  This quarter we'll be exploring how we can effectively use the building information modeling tool, Revit, along with other design software to communicate a small, commercial interior design project.  Starting with ACAD as-built drawings, you'll learn about phasing, design options, linking file types, custom family creation, project deliverables, and rendering. As you'll see in the syllabus schedule, the pace of the class moves rather quickly, and each phase builds on the previous, so it would be in your best interest to keep up.  I know that summer classes can be tricky with pools, beaches, and barbecues lurking around every corner, but rest assured that the effort you put into this class will serve you well both in your future academic studios and professional practice.

Look to this blog for resources, project descriptions, and examples.  I will occasionally be posting your work as examples as well.  If you have any information or questions that you'd like to share with the class feel free to post comments on the blog (where they are permitted).
